Annual examinations
The Achievement in Music Program, also known as AIM, is an exciting and motivating program for students developed by the Illinois State Music Teachers Association. AIM is designed to develop strong performance and technical skills as well as a thorough understanding of musical theory.
Levels
The program comprises a total of 12 levels, each designed to foster progression and growth. Level 1 is divided into three parts: 1A, 1B, and 1C. As students advance through the levels, they encounter a well-structured curriculum encompassing theory, performance, and technical requirements. This progression takes learners from the early elementary stage all the way to advanced levels.
For Levels 1A, 1B, 1C, and 2, the evaluation of theory, technique, and repertoire requirements is conducted through a single comprehensive exam. Starting from Level 3 and beyond, the theory requirements, which include written music theory, sight-reading, aural skills, and keyboard skills, are evaluated separately in an independent examination. Upon successfully completing the theory exam, students become eligible to register for the performance exam, where they demonstrate their abilities through the presentation of 2-4 memorized pieces along with fulfilling the technique requirements. It is important to note that in order to successfully complete a level, students must pass both the theory and performance exams, showcasing their understanding and mastery of the material at hand.

Grading
In order to successfully pass an exam, students must achieve a minimum score of 70 or higher. For students at Level 3 and above, completing a level entails meeting this passing requirement in both the theory and performance exams. Hence, it is necessary for them to obtain a score of 70 or higher in each of these exams to successfully progress to the next level.
Awards
Upon successfully completing a level, students are honored with a certificate, recognizing their achievement and progression in the program. Furthermore, as an additional acknowledgment of their dedication to the theoretical aspects, students also receive a theory pin upon completing the theory exam.
For students at Levels 9 and above, there is an opportunity for further recognition. If they achieve a commendable score of 80 or higher in both the theory and performance exams, they receive a personalized plaque, serving as a testament to their exceptional accomplishments in the program.

Registration
The registration process for exams is handled by the teacher, who also collects the associated fees. When registering, students and parents are encouraged to inform the teacher about their preferred times and days, specifically for Level 3 and above, allowing for consideration of individual scheduling needs. However, it's important to note that once the registration period concludes, no further changes can be made to the schedule. This policy is in place due to the substantial participation of over 350 students each year, ensuring an efficient and organized examination process.

Exam
The examination process varies for different levels. Level 1 students undergo an exam scheduled with a judge, covering keyboard skills, aural skills, and performance aspects. Moving on to Level 2, students encounter an expanded evaluation, which includes an additional written theory exam and an assessment of their aural skills.
For Level 3 and above students, the theory exam takes a different format. It involves a separate appointment with the judge to evaluate their keyboard skills. In addition to this appointment, students are required to complete written theory and aural skills examinations.
During the performance exam, Level 3 and above students have the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery by showcasing their memorized pieces and fulfilling the technical requirements. These performances are scheduled for presentation to a judge, ensuring a comprehensive evaluation of their musical abilities.
To ensure a smooth examination experience, it is important for students to come prepared with a high-quality pencil equipped with an eraser. Additionally, students must bring non-Bluetooth earbuds specifically for the aural skills section of the exam.
Students must present the original purchased music sheets or books to the judge. If the music was acquired online, it is essential to print the purchase proof on the bottom of each page. Please note that photocopies are not accepted. Failure to adhere to this requirement will result in disqualification from the exam.
